Speaking of the saiga-antelope: “NABU” now reported about a mass-dying of Saiga antelopes in Kazakhstan. Within days now the population in this area has been declining by 1/3 and nobody knows why, One theory says that an unknown disease could have killed them the other suggests an unusual vegetation due to heavy rains during the last few weeks. Nevertheless it still is bizarre that mostly females and calves are affected by this
Fact is that for security-reasons people should not eat from these animals as all carcasses had foam before the snout and were surrounded by diarrhea. This is a disaster as Kazakhstan is a poor country and many people indeed feed on these mammals.

P.S. I just realized that for reasons I do not quite understand a comment of mine went missing. Thus I will just repeat what it said: I was granted full permission by the photographer and owner to use this photo on my homepage. However that doesn’t say anything about whether or not he endorses or even just tolerates the work I do here.

By the way there is anotheer kind of critically endangered even – toed ungulate, too. I’m sure all of you know it…It’s the bactrian camel!
In case you want to help them, I can recommend you the website “http://www.wildcamels.com/”. Of course I consider this organisation to be trustworthy. After all I wouldn’t mention them here if I had some kind of supersticion against them, would I?

Just a little joke! Actually this animal is called Saola, but they received the nickname “Asian unicorn”, because compared to the bisons they are related to, they look as graceful as unicorns.
However scientists say that in 20 years the last “unicorn” could already be dead. After all they are critically endangered. Thus there are many websites that give people the chance of getting involved in the preservation of this animal. “http://www.globalwildlife.org/saola.php”, “http://www.savethesaola.org/”, “www.worldwildlife.org” and “http://www.earthwatch.org/europe/donate” are only some examples of links that belong to the homepages of reliable organisations.
