The German newspaper ‘Reutlinger Nachrichten’ says that according to experts you should clean empty honey jars before throwing them away. Bees can smell even small traces of honey and they will collect it even though it’s not honey they made themselves. Where you dispose off an old jar may depend on where you live, but even in a trash can bees can smell these small traces of honey and they will find a way to get there. However honey from the jar may carry some germs that are completely harmless for the human body, but may kill a bee.

The German newspaper ‘Reutlinger Nachrichten’ now wrote an article according to which honey is no better than sugar as a sweetener. It may have some healthy vitamins, minerals and encymes, but these are minimal and get destroyed when being heated – for example when used in a cake to replace sugar or when used to sweeten your hot milk.
Plus most countries don’t have enough beekeepers to satisfy the demands of the population. Thus a lot of honey gets imported from countries like Argentinia or other South American countries or…anyway from very far away – usually by plane and truck which is bad for nature. Even more motorized transportation is caused by them often mixing honey from different regions before putting it into a glass on a supermarket shelf. They do that to make all glasses of honey taste the same. And if you replace sugar by honey due to the sugar industry using children as workers, honey may not help that much either as to replace the honey they steal from their bees beekeepers feed them honey.

‘Marktcheck’ warns you should be careful whom you get your honey from. Recently there have been reports about beekeepers mixing their honey with a syrup won from sugar beet and sugarcane to be able to sell it cheaper, albeit at the same time as an unhealthier product.

“Tierschutz Euskirchen” says that the European Parliament now decided to make the use of three neonicotinoids illegal in agriculture as in the past these insecticides were responsible for the death of many bees.

“Tierschutz Euskirchen” says that the mayor of Berlin (Brandenburg /Germany) now announced that he’ll make Germany’s capital more bee- and ant-friendly. In seven places gardeners received orders to plant different kinds of flowers and grasses to attract more insects.

First comment reuploaded: Well, the number of critically endangered specimens of ants and of bees may be small – only one bee, namely the Franklin’s bumble bee and one ant, namely the Sri Lankan relict ant, but ants and bees are so important to our ecosystem – some scientific sources say their disappearance could cause a worldwide mass-extinction – that I decided to mention them here as well. Furthermore I say they deserve being protected, because of their symbolic meaning. Don’t these creatures teach us not to judge others by their outward appearance, because even extremely small ones can do terrific deeds? Doesn’t the way they work together teach us how important social cohesion is? Isn’t the hard work they do from spring to autumn to feed their young ones and to make it through winter remarkable? I think there even is a fable in which the author makes the comparison between hard-working ants that will have a rather easy life in harsh times and hard-working, money-saving people who won’t have to worry that much about economic crisis.
Last, but not least: They both are able to communicate with their companions and to spread important news without making any noises. Doesn’t this way of life make us question whether or not we really need all these loud noises we have at the moment – loud music, all sorts of loud machines etc.? That’s why I’m in favor of the protection of these animals! That’s why I recommend you the websites “http://www.savetheants.com/donate/” and “http://honeybeekind.com/”, but also – and especially “http://www.hivessavelives.com/_gifts.asp”.
