Your friend just came back from a rad trip to Thailand. Your brother just bought a brand new Tesla. Your roommate just finished watching Game of Thrones. Now, every time you hang out with your friend, she talks for hours about beautiful Thai beaches, amazing Thai food, and friendly Thai people. Every time you see your brother, he tells you how cool his new electric car is. Every time your roommate is home, he says many wonderful things about the TV show. Your friend, your brother, and your roommate wax lyrical about these things.

If you have a favorite thing, you might also wax lyrical about it. It’s easy to talk and talk and talk about the things we love. Wax lyrical means to talk about something with excitement. For example, people often wax lyrical about the holiday season, since it’s a time of happiness and cheer. During the holidays, we can shake off our problems and celebrate life. Wax lyrical can also mean describe something beautifully. You might be very knowledge about something or very skilled at describing a thing.

Kelsey is a talented singer and songwriter. Watch today’s English soap opera to hear her wax lyrical about the lives of her friends.

Kelsey:  I love this time of year

When I get to travel home
To family, old friends, and cheer.
But now there’s a storm,
And so I’ll wax lyrical.
I’ve got the Kelsey Holiday Blues.
Kelsey’s Holiday Blues.

Andy needed a hand volunteering,
so Jordin helped him this week.
When they stood below the mistletoe,
She gave him a kiss on the cheek.
That’s left him feeling confused.
He’s got the Andy Holiday Blues.
Andy’s Holiday Blues.

Jordin’s always the busy one
With school, work, and friends.
She was looking forward to some fun.
She gave Andy a kiss on the cheek,
And now she’s feeling a bit confused.
She’s got the Jordin Holiday Blues.
Jordin’s Holiday Blues.

Sheila likes to travel and have fun.
The storm cancelled her vacation.
Now, she can’t be in the sun,
And she’s sad about Andy’s temptation
She doesn’t know what to do
About these Sheila Holiday Blues.
Sheila’s Holiday Blues.

Dominique had no plans
When she saw that everyone was sad.
So, she threw a big holiday party
That turned out pretty rad.
And we’re going to shake off our Holiday Blues.
So long, Holiday Blues.

I get to wax lyrical
That despite the weather,
It seems like a miracle
That we are all together.
We’ll play a few games,
Watch a few movies, and eat lots of food.
So long, everyone’s Holiday Blues.
So long to the Holiday Blues.

So long, Holiday Blues
We get to say goodbye to the old
And hello to the brand new.
Happy New Year, Sheila, Jordin,
Andy, and Dominique!
I’m so glad to share this time with you.
It’s time!

It’s the end of December, and Kelsey has written a new song. Her song waxes lyrical about the things that happened this month. Jordin kissed Andy… and Sheila saw it. Then, the weather was bad, so Sheila couldn’t go on her vacation. Kelsey and her friends now feel confused and upset. Maybe, singing the Blues will help them shake off the drama?

Dominique wanted to bring cheer to her sad friends. She invites them to a rad party in her home. Her friends watch movies together, eat good food together, and play games together. Everyone has a great time! At midnight, it’s time to count down together and celebrate the beginning of a brand new year. So long, Old Year… Hello, New Year!

What topics can you wax lyrical about? How do you shake off your problems?
