Fad diets come and go like the wind. One minute, we are trying to be like ‘cavemen’ and go ‘paleo.’ The next, we are making a shake of celery, carrots, berries, you name it. Beauty and health experts are hunting for that super fruit with tons of antioxidants. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think diets were like fashion trends. What is in this season?
Turmeric. Turmeric is a yellow powder that is supposed to be very good for you. It has great effects on the human body and is a great antioxidant. It even helps with bruising on the skin and bones. Some evidence suggests it could be a cure for acne, stomach inflammation, types of cancer, mood disorders, and more. But it is very possible that this could all just be another ‘health fad.’
Andy is giving turmeric a try. Listen as Jordin and Andy talk about this miracle powder in today’s English lesson.

Jordin: What’s that yellow stuff?
Andy_H: It’s this orange powder that’s… It’s supposed to be the healthiest thing you can possibly have.
Jordin: What?
Andy_H: So, OK, let me just give you a little bit of… a little bit of knowledge.
Jordin: OK.
Andy_H: So, turmeric is in. That means that right now, like, everybody who is… dietitians… they are all studying turmeric and its effects on the human body. Apparently, it’s supposed to be great for… it’s a great antioxidant. And it’s supposed to be really good to heal bruising in the body, on both…on your skin and on your bones. And I just happened to fall out of a tree recently, don’t ask why, so I’m putting turmeric in everything!
Jordin: Do you think it’s just a fad? Like one of those things that’s going to be in today, but we’re going to realize tomorrow that it actually doesn’t do anything?
Andy_H: I don’t really know, but I’m going to keep putting it in this shake!

Jordin asks Andy what the yellow stuff is. He says it is an orange powder that is supposed to be very, very healthy. He says he’ll give Jordin a little bit of knowledge. Turmeric is in. That means that many dieticians, and people in general, are studying it. It is a great antioxidant and helps with bruising. Andy fell out of a tree, so he is using turmeric to help him heal. Jordin asks if Andy thinks it is just another health fad. Maybe it doesn’t do anything. Andy doesn’t know, but he will keep putting it in his shake!
Do you like turmeric? Do you think it’s very good for you?
