In the lesson  Eminem

Ella:  He’s older, more mature. Less strung up in the fame of being a white rapper.

What does strung up here mean? Could you please explain the meaning and give me a few related examples? Thanks.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out with your question.

The expression “strung up” means nervous or tense. To be honest, it seems that Ella chose the wrong expression. It would make more sense for her to say that Eminem is less “hung up” on the fame of being a white rapper. “Hung up” means having great or even too much interest in someone or something. If Ella meant to say “hung up,” then she was trying to say that now that he’s older, Eminem is no longer spending so much time thinking about how famous he is and is instead singing about what’s really important to him.

For example, “Sarah is really hung up on Robert. She never stops talking about him!” or, “If you become too hung up on passing your exam, you won’t go to bed and get enough sleep.”

I hope this helps!

Best,

Amy
