Karaoke does something to people. No matter how shy you are, when you get together with a group of friends or family to sing karaoke, the shyness disappears. Pretty soon, you can’t wait until it’s your turn again, so you can belt out your favorite love song.

Karaoke is popular because it feels great to lose yourself in a song, and to sing at the top of your lungs. It also feels good to conquer fear.

Listen to Mason and Kevin compare karaoke in Japan with karaoke in the States.

Mason:  I know you’ve been to Asia, right? Like, certain Asian countries? I was in Japan for a while. Did you ever do the karaoke?

Kevin:  Oooh. Oh, yeah. I love karaoke in Japan.

Mason:  Yeah?

Kevin:  It is so fun. Did you do it a lot?

Mason:  I, I only went once, with, like, our exchange family. And what, you know, what really caught me off guard is that we went to this… I was so excited… we went to this little place and we, like, rented a teeny, little room, right? And it was just the six of us in this little thing, we could have gotten drinks or whatever.

Kevin:  Yeah.

Mason:  Um, and honestly, I was kinda bummed out about that.

Kevin:  Really?

Mason:  Yeah, uh, because to me, you know, in America when you go karaoke, it’s at some bar, and it’s, like, one night a week or two nights a week, or some spots, some bars, every night they just go. And it’s just whoever kinda shows up and I love that about it. Like, I love the randomness and the kind of humiliation aspect…

Kevin:  And you have to sing in front of the entire place.

Mason:  And you have to get up there, you have to have the gusto to get up and sing in front of all these strangers and do your thing. And I like that. To me, that’s everything that’s great about karaoke.

Kevin:  You know what I found interesting in Japan, ‘cause I worked in Japan, and I had students who would go alone and do karaoke by themselves.

Mason:  Just in a room?

Kevin:  Yeah.

Mason:  Like, just to practice, to be awesome?

Kevin:  No, just for fun. Because they just love it and it’s literally on every street corner.

Discussion

Mason and Kevin have both done karaoke in Japan. Apparently it is very popular there.

In Japan, small groups of people go into little rooms for a private karaoke party.

In the United States, bars and restaurants have karaoke nights. If you participate, you sing in front of your friends, as well as a crowd of strangers. Mason loves that aspect of karaoke in the States. It takes guts.

Do you like to do karaoke? Is it popular in your country?
