Lesson

When we learn a language, there are four skills that we need for complete communication. When we learn our native language, we usually learn to listen first, then to speak, then to read, and finally to write. These are called the four "language skills":

  • Skill #1: Listening
  • Skill #2: Speaking
  • Skill #3: Reading
  • Skill #4: Writing

The 4 language skills

The four language skills are related to each other in two ways:

  • the direction of communication (in or out)
  • the method of communication (spoken or written)

Input is sometimes called "reception" and output is sometimes called "production". Spoken is also known as "oral".

Out of the four skills when you learn a language, the speaking and writing ones are the most important of all, I think.

For instance, when you can speak English comprehensibly and fluently, you can write it as smoothly as possible since writing takes much more time than speaking.

The more reading practice you do, the better your spoken English would be, In the long run, you would speak English as fluently as a native speaker of English.

I would practice reading English as If I´m talking to either Mr Barack Obama or The Queen of Britain. And when I actually talk to a native speaker of English, a Briton or American, for instance, I do feel as if I´m talking to my fellow countryman in my mother tongue.  I do the same when I take my relatives and friends to English and the share the same experience I have had.

Remember that constant practice makes perfect!

I think learning a language is not limited to mentioned 4 skills we need some other competences too including, social or cultural knowledge and some other strategies to compensate the lack of language knowledge and off course self confidence.

to improve listening skill you should listen as much as you can, but make sure before listening set a goul for yourself at first steps dont expect to understand word by word. keep in your mind that when you learn a language academically or consciously ,listening is very defficult skill , so keep your motivation up.
