Millions of people around the world have been affected by the attack in New York City. Here in Portland, on the other side of the country, we worry about what will happen next. If all of us feel so strongly, how do the people in New York feel?
Gavin, an Ebaby! Pal, lives in New York. I called him the other day to talk about what life is like there after the attack.
Here’s our conversation.

John:  Well, Gavin, thanks a lot for taking the time to talk to us today on the phone. You’re living out there in New York City and now that it’s been about ten days since the attack I, uh, kinda wanted to check in and see how how life is.

Gavin:  Well, um, people are a little wary. Some people, um… I have friends that lost a lot of friends, uh, but people, I think, have, you know, a good amount of resolve and, um, people are going back to work and… but nothing’s the same.

John:  What’s the feeling on the street when you’re out walking around in public?

Gavin:  Well it’s actually very odd because New Yorkers for the first time that I’ve seen are actually talking to one another. I mean, you know, people are… when people ask “how are you doing?” they mean “how are you doing.” It’s not just, uh, it’s not just “how ya doin?” It’s how are you really?

John:  Right. So, it’s… and that’s something that has kinda differed from the past? I mean, you hear… we hear about New York City now as maybe a changed city and, and you agree with that?

Gavin:  Absolutely. I mean, people are really angry. And, uh, a lot of people are, uh, you know, missing spouses. Lots of people are concerned for one another’s safety. You know, they’re concerned for, you know, not just New York but all, all Americans. I think it really… it’s really sort of brought people together. I don’t know. I certainly appreciate people’s, people’s openness and honesty in New York at this time.

John:  Right. Is there any kind of fear that this, that this will happen again?

Gavin:  Yeah there is. Because if you look at New York, it’s such close quarters. I mean, everyone is tightly packed into a fairly… onto a fairly small island and, uh, you know, one little thing can cause a lot of injuries and a lot of, you know… It doesn’t take much.

John:  Right. Now, have you been down to the site?

Gavin:  No, you can’t go down further than, uh, Chambers Street and if you look at a map, you can see where that is. It’s fairly close. You can get within a few blocks of it. My, my, uh, friend’s wife works down in that area – only about five blocks away or something.

John:  Well, thanks a lot for, uh, sharing your feelings with us and, um, hopefully we can check in with you at a later date and maybe, maybe see how things are going then.

Gavin:  Absolutely.

John:  Alright, thanks Gavin.

Gavin:  Yeah.

Discussion

As you can tell, Gavin has suffered through a scary experience. But you can also tell that he’s feeling positive too.
The attack was horrible, but there has been some good to come out of it. It has made people stronger and more caring about each other.
If you have any comments about these events, please come to the Life Goes On Message Board and share them. Otherwise, we’ll see you next week.
Your American Friend,
John
