Have you ever lived with a roommate? Sharing your space can be difficult, but sometimes, really good friendships happen between roommates. For example, maybe, you and your roommate discover that you both like the same music. Or perhaps, you are both interested in exercise, so you become jogging buddies. You and your roommate are making friends. You have started getting chummy.
We use the expression “get chummy” to talk about becoming good friends with someone. You could get chummy with a classmate, a co-worker, or even someone you meet at the coffee shop! Some of us get chummy with new people very easily. Other people take time to get to know someone. But whether it takes minutes or months, it’s a great feeling to make a new friend!
Jordan and Kelsey are getting to know each other. Watch the video to find out what they talk about.
3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Jordin: Those two sure are getting chummy.
Kelsey: Mmm hmm.
Jordin: I never thought those two would have so much to talk about. Ugh!
Kelsey: Mmm hmm.
Jordin: Kelsey? Earth to Kelsey.
Kelsey: Mmm hmm?
Jordin: Kelsey. Your pants are on fire.
Kelsey: Mmm hmm.
Jordin: Kelsey!
Kelsey: What? Oh, sorry. I’m totally spacing out, aren’t I?
Jordin: Yeah. Are you OK?
Kelsey: Not really. I’m trying to work on this song for today, but… Well, my roommate’s moving out, and I’m not sure what to do! There are so many options. I could move to a smaller apartment, or I could find another roommate… or… Well, I guess there are only two options.
Jordin: Well, when does your roommate have to move out?
Kelsey: Next week.
Jordin: Well, I was thinking about moving into student housing next month when school starts, but I think it would be way more fun to move in with you.
Kelsey: Really?! Are you serious?
Jordin: Well, I mean, if that’s cool.
Kelsey: Are you kidding?! That’s totally cool! Can you move in next week?
Jordin: For sure!
Kelsey: Awesome!
Sheila: OK, let’s rehearse one more time. Andy!? Those two sure are getting chummy….

Jordin is watching Andy and Sheila rehearse. She never thought they would have so much to talk about, and she is upset that they are making friends. Jordin tries to talk to Kelsey about it, but Kelsey is spacing out. It turns out that Kelsey has problems of her own. She is worried because her roommate is going to move out. She can’t pay the rent on her own, so she will either have to get a new roommate or find a new apartment.
Jordin tells Kelsey that she was planning on moving into student housing next month. However, if it’s OK with Kelsey, she thinks it would be really fun for them to move in together. Kelsey agrees. She is excited to have Jordin as a roommate. Meanwhile, Sheila sees them talking and laughing. She is surprised that they have gotten so chummy.
Do you prefer to live alone or with a roommate?
