Women’s Day! Some people view women’s day as a time to party. We should pamper all of the women in our lives on this day. Instead of being a boring activist, we should give them lots of presents like flowers and chocolate. Of course, there are others who look forward to Women’s Day for other reasons.

Women face a lot of issues today. They still suffer from discrimination and harassment. Some people view Women’s Day as a way to talk about these issues. We still have to do a lot of work until women are treated fairly. We need to do more than just give the ladies chocolate and flowers.

Romeo is very excited to talk about Women’s Day. Listen as Marni gets a little sarcastic with Romeo in today’s English lesson.

Romeo:  I am so looking forward to the Women’s Day… International Women’s Day.

Marni:  I see that you’re stocking up on flowers and chocolate.

Romeo:  Yes, I am! It’s a day to pamper. Celebrate!

Marni:  OK. Sure, yeah, I guess that’s definitely one way to look at it.

Romeo:  I feel like you’re being sarcastic.

Marni:  Uhh…

Romeo:  Or condescending… one of those two…

Marni:  Well, I mean, I guess, sure. You know, I… I think you can look at it that way. I think you can also look at it as a day to explore issues that affect women, and being more open and supportive of those, and more vocal.

Romeo:  Sure.

Marni:  More of an activist sort of role, right?

Romeo:  Yeah, yeah.

Marni:  I mean, flowers and chocolate are nice. Who doesn’t like that?

Romeo:  OK.

Marni:  Right?

Romeo:  OK, so it’s, like, a day of acknowledgment?

Marni:  I mean, that’s, to me, how I would like to perceive this day, but I think that a lot of people are just like, “You know, I’m just going to honor women with nice things.”

Romeo:  Right, right.

Romeo is looking forward to Women’s Day, specifically International Women’s Day. Marni sees that he is stocking up on flowers and chocolate. Romeo thinks he should pamper the women in his life with gifts. Marni comments that’s one way to look at it. Romeo feels like she is being sarcastic and condescending.

Marni is a little. She just thinks people should take Women’s Day more seriously. It’s a day to explore women’s issues, talk about them, and be more vocal. It’s the time to take on more of an activist role. She does agree with Romeo that flowers and chocolate are nice. But she thinks Women’s Day is about more than that.

What do you think about Women’s Day? What are some important issues women face?
