In the new movie Veronica Guerin (2003), Cate Blanchett plays a young journalist in Dublin, Ireland during the mid-1990s. At the time, Dublin was a violent place, with a few powerful drug lords battling for control of the city. Their most fearsome opponent was not the police, but the courageous Veronica Guerin. She investigated and exposed the “pushers,” who were selling drugs to the people of Dublin. In doing so, she became a national folk heroine to the people of Ireland.

Miguel:  Hey Beth, have you seen the movie Veronica Guerin?

Beth:  No. What’s it about?

Miguel:  Well, it’s the story of this Irish reporter who, um, it’s actually a true story, but she did some amazing things to bring down the drug traffickers in Dublin. But, I just saw it the other night and it’s really an amazing film.

Beth:  So, is it a documentary?

Miguel:  No. It’s actually a film starring Cate Blanchett, and, uh, she is Veronica Guerin. And, um, it does portray true events, but it’s actually, you know, a live-action film.

Beth:  Wow. That sounds really cool. Was it the kind of film that’s more of a action-adventure film, or a drama?

Miguel:  That’s a good question. There’s definitely action, but it’s more of a drama. It’s really her personal story, ‘cause she was definitely an extraordinary woman.

Discussion

I haven’t seen Veronica Guerin, but I know her story. I remember reading about her back in 1996, when she stories about her were being published in the U.S.. I’m a big Cate Blanchett fan, and I think Veronica Guerin is a perfect role for her. Cate is like a chameleon, so even though she’s Australian, I’m sure she does a great job of playing and Irish woman.
If you’ve seen Veronica Guerin and you liked it, or if you like Cate Blanchett, you should check out these films: Heaven, Charlotte Gray and Elizabeth.
See you at the movies!
