“Tagesschau” says that in the rainforest of Guatemala scientists discovered the ruins of a Mayan city. There were about 10.000 of buildings and probably millions of people must have lived there. They found religious buildings and monuments, walls and dikes to protect the city, a complex watering-system and dams to control the flow of a river for several miles.
These ruins even offer clues as to what Mayan agriculture must have looked like.
They say there may be many more Mayan ruins left to discover, but sadly during acts of deforestation of the Guatemalan rainforest also some ruins may get damaged.

The latest episode of “Topwelt” – a German adaption of the American TV-show “Alltime10” – was about mysteries that finally got solved recently. For a long time scientists thought that the Mayan Empire went down due to epidemics, wars or a combination of both. Some even blamed this on bad leadership and thought the last Mayan ruler might have been incompetent. The episode fails to explain how these scientists found out about that or why they didn’t find out earlier, but now they found out they accidentally caused too much deforestation. Their destruction of parts of the rain forest caused erosion, ruining the harvest. Also many wild animals and plants they ate became rarer as their ecological system vanished. Thus they just moved on in small groups to find a new home, leaving their former social structure and political system behind.

“Domradio” says that all over Guatemala farmers now face hard times: During what is considered the worst drought in Guatemala for the past few decades beans and corn died due to the intense heat and now a fungal infection is killing off their coffee-plantations.

Wow! Last time I posted a comment was almost exactly one year ago:
On a waste disposal site in Guatemala heavy rain caused one pile of garbage to collapse with the impact killing three people and injuring ten gravely. These people were not hired by the owner of this site. They were simply very poor – in some cases even homeless – and hoped they could find something either edible or sellable in this place. I heard that on the news yesterday as I watched “Tagesschau”.

Re-uploads:
>The aid-organization “Adveniat” now makes some advertisement for their projects in Latin America. As Christmas is approaching they have sent letters to households giving them information on how their projects are going: “Adveniat” says that in many Latin American countries – including Guatemala – peasants are having a hard time trying to get their families through as extreme weather recently has destroyed quite a lot of harvest. Most of the food those living in slums get to eat is rotten and they live in crowded shanties without water. Children show signs of malnutrition that will destroy their health permanently. Many of these kids have never seen a doctor.
On the bank account:

IBAN: DE03 3606 0295 00000173 45
they collect money to educate and hire teachers to be and teach peasants for example in sustainable agriculture and hygiene.
>In case you want to get involved you will find tips concerning what you – the individual – could do on the websites “http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/adopt/projects/guatemala” and “http://www.worldlandtrust-us.org/?page=donate”. They depend on people who support them in their fight for the survival of the rainforest.
