hi shad84! Fernandes is not a portuguese surname, it's spanish, one of the oldest spanish surnames!!!! that surname was born in the kingdom of Castilla about X century! and then that surname became more popular in other lands. 

Fernandes  is the way that portuguese write it, in spanish we write Fernandez, but both names have the same ancestors.

That man is an anonymous USA soldier that came to Spain to fight against the fascist troops during the civil war. Our government is trying to find his family to give him all the honors of a hero because there wasn't any black man in Spain in that time. He is now a hero for us.

Fernandes is a surname now… but in the past it was used as a patronymic that means "Son of Fernando"! So as I have this surname, it doesnt mean my relatives that had such surname were from Spain once! Actually I dont know when it started.. and I still may be wrong!! But my Fernandes is from Portugal!!

Luckly I don't have a typical latino surname :p my surname is unique
