"The other" refers to someone or something specific. For example, "I like the first Transformers movie but I have not seen the other."

"An other" is not specific; it could refer to any other. For instance, "I don't like this kind of juice. I would prefer an other."

 

Remember, "the" is the definite article, which refers to something specific. A and an are indefinite articles, which refer to non-specific things.
